Laughter is really healthy

And, how will it fit? Are you still just as cheerful as before you participated in IkPas, or is your mood showing the first cracks and cracks? If you - or your housemates - have to determine that your sense of humor seems to be less present lately, we can only say: don't worry, that's quite normal.

Are you someone who normally likes a joke, but seems to have lost your sense of humor since this challenge? Don't worry, soon you'll be your funny self again. You may be a little more tense because of your alcohol break. And as soon as your brain -consciously or unconsciously- feels tension, there is less room left for funny thoughts.

Laughing is healthy

The saying is 'laughter is healthy' for a reason. The moment our brain registers something funny, we have to laugh. This is the signal for our body to relax. Laughter decreases the production of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. And that is good for your body and mind. At the same time, your brain produces various happiness hormones during laughter, such as endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. And let these substances have a calming and relaxing effect. Exactly what you need to come up with funny thoughts yourself!

Fun facts about laughter:

  • Once your brain is in the laugh mode, it will stay there. That explains why we sometimes keep laughing, even after the funny situation is over.
  • Your brain doesn't feel the difference between a real smile and a fake smile. A quick mock laugh also works to get that relaxed feeling.
  • You can train your sense of humour: by exposing yourself more to things you find funny, by researching which kind of humor appeals to you, by learning to put things into perspective and above all: by sharing something funny with others more often. This creates an interaction and suddenly there is much more to laugh about!
  • Laughter is good for your immune system. Those who laugh a lot have more antibodies and are therefore less likely to get sick.

Give yourself a good dose of humor

Do you want your old familiar, funny self back? Then give yourself a big laugh stimulus. So put on a comedy or watch funny skits from your favorite comedian. Bottom line: give yourself some laughter therapy. You will see that you will feel more relaxed. And then it's only a matter of time before you and your sense of humor can embrace each other again.
