More than 40% from parents adheres to NIX18
In fact, 44 percent of parents think it is unwise to let their child drink alcohol if they are not yet 18 years old. This is the conclusion of a survey conducted by EenVandaag among 28,000 people, including 900 with a 16 or 17-year-old child.
Because, say the parents, alcohol is bad for brain development, so it is better to wait until their child is 18 years old. And that's right. Alcohol is particularly harmful to the young brain.
That's why not
“Young brains are far from mature. They just want to develop. Alcohol counteracts this. No alcohol helps children concentrate better, allows them to get home safely from a party and reduces the risk of addiction. So do not give alcohol to your child under 18. This way you protect them for now and later”. Erik Scherder, professor of neuropsychology |
Not vs. well
The 44 percent who want to comply with the NIX18 law are contrasted with the 56 percent who allow their 16 or 17-year-old to drink alcohol. The argument of this group for allowing their child(ren) to drink alcohol is: 'It just comes with age.' Parents also like the idea of their child(ren) drinking alcohol at home instead of at someone else's or in a drinking shack.
Different view of alcohol
At the same time, two thirds (65 percent) indicate that they have become more aware of the risks of alcohol for their health in recent years. Four in ten (43 percent) have started to view alcohol more negatively in the last 5 years, mainly because of this health aspect.
About the research
The survey was conducted from July 31 to August 3, 2023. 28,254 members of the EenVandaag Opinion Panel participated in the survey, including 935 with a child aged 16 or 17. The results are weighted on the total number of respondents and are representative of six variables, namely: age, gender, education, marital status, distribution across the country and political preference measured by the 2021 parliamentary elections. The Opinion Panel consists of more than 80,000 members. |
