Time for action

Sitting is the new smoking. And that sounds as unhealthy as it is. Because we sit on our backs so much, we have to compensate with something. Movement is the magic word. So grab yourself by the scruff after your last online lecture and go with that banana.

Keeping moving is good for a person. It keeps your body in shape and mentally refreshes things as well. Adults should exercise at least 2.5 hours of moderate intensity every week and do muscle and bone strengthening exercises (strength training) twice a week. What does moderate-intensity exercise mean?

  • Take a brisk walk
  • Fast pedaling on the bike
  • Walking the dog
  • Gardening
  • Brushing (is much appreciated by your housemates)
  • swimming quietly

If you want a little more action in the taxi, you can move on to intensive exercise.

Research by the Behavioral Unit (RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Compliance with quarantine and isolation advice, 2020) showed that many people needed a breath of fresh air, exercise in the open air or would like to work on their condition.

This is also very understandable, 1 in 3 Dutch people started exercising less during the corona pandemic (NOCNSF, 2020). Fortunately, you can also exercise at home in the garden or on the balcony.

Peeing upstairs

Sometimes you are busy and that movement just doesn't work. Don't worry, tomorrow is a new day. Try to make small healthy choices on such a non-sports day. Go upstairs to the toilet, make a new cup of coffee or tea every time instead of a pitcher or pot in one go, or put a few weights next to your textbooks. Saves again!
